Crestfern has built a reputation within the mining industry for excellence
BHP Billiton and Crestfern have produced an e-learning resource and piloted it in industry. The focus of the research project that was undertaken was in the vocational area of mining and complex industries, to develop blended e-learning packages in the competencies of Working at Heights, Working in Confined space and SCBA/Longline. The package will deliver to the workers who engage in these work practices, access to a consistent process for recognition of their knowledge and skills. Additionally, the packages include refresher calculators that indicate when the workers need to refresh their knowledge and skills. This can be done utilising these e-learning processes. Register on the homepage to access the free online demonstrations.
Crestfern has also developed a course on HSEC Contractor Management for use in one of their assets. This is a course that has been designed and pitched at a wide level of workers within the industry, and is designed to be very interactive so that participants can immediately apply the skills and knowledge learnt when back in the workplace.
Lesley was named National Mining industry trainer in 2007.
The following is an outline of experience:
- In October 1996 the Queensland State Government engaged Crestfern to conduct all the pre-employment programs for the Queensland Gulf communities for the construction of the Century Mine in the Gulf of Queensland. These courses were designed by Crestfern and conducted in the most part by Lesley, with a success rate of 78% retention of the participants in the construction phase of the mine. The course was designed to be an orientation/introduction for Gulf community people into the mine.
- Following from that work, Crestfern has continued to be a trainer for the mine and its participants, visiting the mine at least 6 times every year since that date. The scope of the delivery has been in traineeship, accredited courses as well as especially designed leadership programs for mine workers at first line management level. Crestfern has trained staff from Zinifex, REJV, Roche, Hughes, Orica, and Komatsu at this mine to this day.
- Crestfern also conducted training in management and trainer training for a wide range of Orica staff from both above ground, and underground across Queensland.
- As a result of this successful work, Crestfern has completed a wide ranging skills assessment for Roche mining in the Pilbara region of all Indigenous clients, this skills assessment was designed by Crestfern and the report presented actually was instrumental in Roche obtaining contracts in that area.
- Crestfern also conducted training for staff of Selwyn underground mine, in 2003.
- In 2001 and 2002, Crestfern was contracted to do some training for Placerdome mining at Porgera in New Guinea, the training covered all areas of personnel on the mine and initially there was a skills assessment of participants, and then training in trainer skills. The majority of the participants were New Guinea nationals and I found my four trips there incredibly rewarding, and interesting I loved the local people.
- Crestfern has been delivering training to a wide range of mines across Australia for the development of resources and assessment tools throughout the years.
- For 2.5 years Crestfern set-up and delivered training to 8 groups of new inductees into a BHPB processing plant called QNI in the Townsville region. At the same time the company put forward designs to improve the whole assessment system across the site. Developed a course on Change Management and delivered many other training services.
- In 2006 Crestfern won a National research e-learning project with BHPB corporate to develop several e-learning tools in highly dangerous practices such as Working at Heights and Confined Space which was widely received by the industry and has lead to many other network contacts and business opportunities.
- In 2006 we designed and developed a course on Contractor Safety Management for BMA a BHPB asset in the Bowne Basin that has 12 operations, this has lead to many rewards including that the system is now the basis for the model for BHPB corporate guidelines.
- In 2007 Lesley Wemyss has won the prestigious inaugural Trade Excellence Teacher award for the Mining Industry presented at the National Safety forum in Cairns.
